Gandhi Tum Zinda Ho

After independence, during the aftermath of violence Gandhiji leaves for Belaghat. He takes shelter in a Muslim neighbourhood in the house of Tarakeshwar Pandey, a Hindu and a follower of Gandhiji. Tarakeshwar is recovering from the throes of tragedy, as his child had been killed in the riots. Gandhiji advises him to be patient. He also tells Tarakeshwar to raise a Muslim child, Aftab as his own, much to the chagrin of Pandey’s wife Sumitra. But when Hindu fundamentalists plot to abduct and kill Aftab, Sumitra comes to his rescue. She also allows him to abide by the tenets of Islam. The child grows is a harmonious environment. However influenced by the Jehadi groups, one day he attacks a marriage procession. In the clamour he finds an abandoned child and takes him home. Muslim fundamentalists chase him to his home. They try to kill Aftab, but Tarakeshwar protects him, sacrificing his own life. Good sense and wisdom prevails over Aftab and he decides to rear the child according to the tenets of humanism.
